Domaine Renardat-Fâche Bugey Cerdon is a highly celebrated, demi-sec sparkling rosé wine from the tiny Bugey region in the foothills of the French Alps. Crafted by the Renardat family—who have been vignerons for eight generations—it is famous for its vibrant pink hue, low alcohol content (typically 7.5% to 8% ABV), and refreshing, berry-forward profile.
Grapes & Terroir
- The Blend: It is made from a blend of Gamay and Poulsard grapes.
-
The Farming: The family manages 13 hectares of steep, rocky, clay-limestone slopes in the village of Mérignat. The estate is fully certified organic and biodynamic.
The Method: Méthode Ancestrale
Unlike Champagne, which undergoes a secondary fermentation triggered by added sugar and yeast, this sparkling wine is made using the Méthode Ancestrale (ancestral method):
- Natural Fermentation: The hand-picked grapes are gently pressed and naturally fermented using only indigenous yeasts.
- Cold Bottling: At around 6% alcohol, the wine is chilled to slow down fermentation, lightly filtered, and bottled.
- Trapped Bubbles: The active yeasts continue consuming the remaining natural grape sugars inside the bottle. This builds up natural carbonation and finishes at about 8% ABV, leaving behind a delicate sweetness (around 60g/L of residual sugar) balanced by crisp alpine acidity.
Tasting Notes & Serving Suggestions
- Profile: It bursts with bright aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, and wild cream, yielding a palate that is delightfully sweet yet crisp and racy.
- Pairing: Its low alcohol and clean acidity make it incredibly versatile. It functions beautifully as a refreshing aperitif, a brunch companion, or paired with light desserts (even dark chocolate).
- Service: Serve it well-chilled (40–45°F). Wine professionals often recommend serving it in a wide-mouthed glass or standard white wine glass rather than a narrow flute to let the aromas expand.
