The 2023 Bodegas Breca Garnacha de Fuego is a highly acclaimed, full-bodied Spanish red wine produced from 100% Garnacha de Aragón (considered the oldest clone of Grenache in the world). Sourced from old, dry-farmed mountain vineyards in the high-altitude region of Calatayud, Spain, this vintage is widely celebrated by critics as an exceptional value.
Profile & Tasting Notes
- Aroma: A vivid perfume of ripe black cherry, strawberry liqueur, and blackberry, layered with wild lavender, peppery spice, and dried herbs.
- Palate: Rich, concentrated, and full-bodied (15% ABV). It offers a creamy center of strawberry, dark chocolate, and licorice with subtle stony, wet-rock mineral textures.
- Structure: Bright, sweet-tart acidity balances the intense fruit, supported by supple, fine-grained tannins that provide an elegant framework.
Critical Acclaim & Scores
- Vinous (92 Points): "Ripe, with sour cherry, a faint sanguine note, floral tones, vermouth hints and gentle field herbs over soft jam. Concentrated, with lightly robust tannins..."
- Jeb Dunnuck (90 Points): "Grown at high elevation... There's a spiciness to the front of the palate that evolves into a creamy center of strawberry, blood orange, and wet rock-like texture..."
- Wilfred Wong (90 Points): Recognition that underscores its remarkable depth and concentration for its affordable price tier.
Vineyard & Production Details
- Old Vines: The grapes are hand-harvested from head-trained vines planted between 1945 and 1985.
- Extreme Climate: Vineyards sit at 2,600 to 3,500 feet above sea level, exposing the fruit to massive diurnal temperature swings (up to 40–100°F in the summer). This allows the grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness while retaining high natural acidity.
- Winemaking: Fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts in stainless steel and concrete tanks, then briefly aged in the same vessels to preserve primary fruit expressions and soften the tannins without heavy oak influence.
Food Pairings
Because of its bold profile, high alcohol, and rich fruit structure, this Garnacha de Fuego pairs beautifully with:
- Roasted beef, lamb chops, or grilled venison
- Hearty stews and barbecue
- Aged, hard cheeses like Manchego
